Moovit implementing Inclusive approach Project: Enhancing Ride Planning for Older Adults and People with Cognitive Disabilities
Working on behalf of the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), I spearheaded a transformative project for Moovit, aiming to implement an inclusive approach and tailor its services to the unique needs of older adults and individuals with cognitive disabilities. The endeavor was fueled by the mission to increase public transportation usage among individuals with disabilities in Israel.
Project Goals:
User Evaluation: Conducted a comprehensive evaluation, identifying pain points through focus groups and in-depth analysis of the mental models of older users and those with cognitive impairments.
While 11.7% of Moovit users in Israel are 65+, with 1.8% having a registered disability according to the Ministry of Transportation. Challenges Identified which highlighted significant challenges for individuals with cognitive impairments, especially in ride planning, waiting times, and data representation.
Research Focus:
Mental Models: Explored the mental models of older users and those with cognitive impairments concerning ride planning, emphasizing their desire for autonomy and the challenges they face in making decisions.
Confidence Building: Recognized the pivotal role of confidence in their desire to use public transportation independently, with insights into their reliance on external factors for reassurance.
Key Findings:
Decision-Making Dynamics: Discovered that decisions for people with cognitive disabilities are often made by staff or family members, and once a decision is made, there is a fixation with limited flexibility.
Reassurance for Confidence: Emphasized the importance of reassurance in increasing confidence, leading to the proposal of features like saving future rides, sharing suggested routes, and receiving status notifications.
Comfortable Journey Mode: Introduced a journey mode tailored for comfort, avoiding long walks and complex transfers, aligning with the preferences of older adults.
Voice Interaction: Implemented voice search and live navigation to enhance accessibility for users with cognitive disabilities.
Project Impact:
This project not only addressed specific pain points in Moovit's UX for older adults and those with cognitive disabilities but also set the stage for inclusive design principles that resonate with a broader user base. The proposed features aim to not just improve functionality but also foster a sense of autonomy and confidence in public transportation use.
